West Quay Booking: 06:00 App, 07:00 Phone, 10:00 Pre-Book
West Quay Medical Centre has several appointment routes, and the times are easy to mix up. The NHS Wales App can release a small number of same-day GP and Advanced Nurse Practitioner appointments from 06:00, the automated telephone system starts appointment booking from 07:00, and additional pre-bookable GP, nurse and healthcare assistant appointments are available from 10:00, subject to availability.
The main surgery is on Hood Road in Barry, with a branch at Rhoose. This guide explains which booking route to use, the difference between door and phone hours, how cancellations work, and what to do when the practice is closed.
QUAY
BOOKING
Emergency and Out-of-Hours Help
West Quay is a GP practice, not an emergency department. Do not wait for an appointment booking system when emergency care is needed.
Call 999.
Call 111 for NHS 111 Wales. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
West Quay’s current practice leaflet directs patients to NHS 111 Wales and option 2 for urgent mental health support.
NHS 111 Wales describes normal GP out-of-hours cover as 18:30–08:00 on weekdays, plus weekends and bank holidays.
How to Book a West Quay Medical Centre Appointment
West Quay now gives patients more than one route. The best route depends on whether you need a same-day slot, a future appointment, or help changing an appointment already booked.
Decide whether you need same-day or future care
If the problem needs GP or Advanced Nurse Practitioner attention today, check the NHS Wales App from 06:00. Only a small number of same-day slots are released, so availability can disappear quickly.
Use the automated line if phone booking suits you
Call 01446 500578. West Quay describes this as its automated appointment service. You can use it at any time to check, cancel or rearrange appointments, while new appointment booking starts from 07:00.
From 10:00, check pre-bookable appointments
The practice says pre-bookable GP, practice nurse and healthcare assistant appointments become available through the booking system from 10:00, subject to capacity.
Use reception when the automated route does not fit
Call 01446 722792 if you need help choosing an appointment type, cannot use digital booking, or need information that the automated system cannot provide.
Check the clinician, time and location
West Quay operates both the main Barry surgery and Rhoose Surgery. Read the full confirmation before travelling rather than assuming the appointment is at Hood Road.
If you want to compare another Welsh practice where NHS Wales App booking sits alongside telephone and care-navigation routes, the Crwys Medical Centre patient guide explains a Cardiff example within the same health-board area.
West Quay Booking Times: 06:00, 07:00, 08:00 and 10:00
These times refer to different systems. Treating them as one opening time is the easiest way to end up using the wrong route.
A small number of same-day GP and Advanced Nurse Practitioner appointments are released from 06:00.
New appointment booking through 01446 500578 starts from 07:00, subject to availability.
West Quay’s normal telephone opening starts at 08:00 on weekdays.
Pre-bookable GP, nurse and healthcare assistant appointments become available through the practice’s booking arrangements.
Same-Day GP and Advanced Nurse Practitioner Appointments
West Quay has made a small number of same-day appointments bookable through the NHS Wales App from 06:00 each morning. These can be GP or Advanced Nurse Practitioner slots and are specifically described as limited.
Check early
Open the NHS Wales App from 06:00 if you are trying to find a same-day slot.
Read the clinician type
A same-day appointment may be with a GP or an Advanced Nurse Practitioner rather than automatically with a named doctor.
No slot showing?
Use the practice’s other booking routes or contact reception. An empty app screen does not mean every type of practice access has ended for the day.
The practice’s March 2026 patient-group minutes recorded that only selected same-day slots were being released through the app, typically a small number across the morning and afternoon.
A different Welsh triage model is explained in our Cwmfelin Medical Centre guide , where GP requests are categorised differently.
Can You Ask to See the Same Clinician?
Yes, West Quay says patients can request a preferred clinician, but the practice cannot guarantee that person will always be available. Urgency, working days and the type of care required all affect the choice.
This matters most for an ongoing problem or follow-up where the clinician already knows the history. Tell reception or the booking team when your request follows a previous consultation and give the clinician’s name if known.
Door Hours, Phone Hours and Appointment Hours Are Different
West Quay publishes three different timing concepts. This is particularly useful if you are deciding whether to phone, physically visit or attend a booked consultation.
| Access type | Monday–Friday | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Main surgery doors | 08:20–18:00 | Physical door opening for the Hood Road surgery. |
| Main telephone | 08:00–18:30 | Telephone access starts before the doors open and continues after the doors close. |
| Appointment availability | 08:30–18:00 | The official appointment page describes appointments as available within this weekday period. |
| Automated service | Accessible 24/7 | Check, cancel and rearrange at any time; new booking availability follows the practice’s published release times. |
| Weekend | Main surgery closed | For urgent non-emergency help, use NHS 111 Wales. |

Repeat Prescriptions: Do Not Phone a Routine Order
West Quay says routine repeat prescription requests are not taken by telephone. The practice asks patients to allow at least 72 hours, excluding weekends and bank holidays, for processing.
| Route | West Quay position | Useful preparation |
|---|---|---|
| NHS Wales App | Accepted for repeat medication where the item is available. | Secure NHS login and the correct repeat item. |
| Prescription box / external mailbox | Accepted written route. | Use the repeat slip and mark only what is required. |
| Post / email / other published written route | Listed by the practice. | Allow extra time where delivery or collection is involved. |
| Telephone | Not accepted for routine repeat requests. | Use another approved route. |
For a detailed comparison of NHS Wales App, written and pharmacy-managed prescription routes, the Crwys repeat-prescription guide provides another Cardiff and Vale example.
Test Results and Blood Tests
West Quay tells patients to wait for the expected result date given when the test is arranged, then contact the surgery after 14:00 to check the result.
Reception can relay some results but cannot provide clinical interpretation. If you need explanation or follow-up, arrange the appropriate clinician contact.
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board lists West Quay patients as eligible to use the Barry Hospital phlebotomy service. That service is appointment-only.
West Quay’s own results page currently describes Barry Hospital blood tests as running on weekdays from 08:30 to 15:30. Use the current booking route before travelling; the health board specifically asks patients not to arrive for phlebotomy without an appointment.
Registering With West Quay Medical Centre
West Quay welcomes new patients who live within its practice area. Registration starts with the postcode boundary check on the practice website.
Check your postcode first
Use West Quay’s official registration page and enter your postcode in the boundary checker.
Complete the new-patient registration form
If your address is inside the practice area, continue to the practice’s registration form.
Have your NHS number if you know it
West Quay says the NHS number is helpful during registration, although you should follow the official form’s current requirements rather than sending information to a directory site.
Include current medication accurately
The registration questionnaire asks about medicines, allergies, medical history and preferred pharmacy.
If your postcode falls outside West Quay’s boundary, use our UK NHS GP surgery finder guide to check another practice rather than repeatedly submitting a form to a surgery that does not cover your address.
Two West Quay Changes Patients Should Know in 2026
Minor operations and joint injections
From May 2026, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board introduced yearly limits on some procedures delivered in GP practices. West Quay says joint injections are now provided through a monthly clinic up to the annual funded limit, while minor operations use specific clinic sessions during the year.
If all funded appointments have been used, the practice says patients may need another route rather than simply booking another GP procedure slot.
MedLink monitoring
From the end of August 2026, West Quay began introducing MedLink for some long-term-condition reviews and repeat-medication monitoring.
MedLink is used to contact relevant patients when a review, blood test or monitoring check is due and can collect information before the clinical team decides the next step.
If you want to compare another modern GP booking system with online triage and telephone fallback, the Barlow Medical Centre booking guide shows how a different NHS practice separates its digital and reception routes.
Accessibility and Before-You-Travel Checks
West Quay’s current practice leaflet states that both the Barry and Rhoose sites have full disabled access. NHS 111 Wales also lists disabled access for the main West Quay surgery.
- Check whether your appointment is at West Quay or Rhoose.
- Check the appointment time separately from the building’s door hours.
- If you need a preferred clinician, mention this when booking; availability cannot be guaranteed.
- If you need a reasonable adjustment or alternative information format, contact reception before travelling.
- Do not travel to Barry Hospital for a blood test without a booking; the local phlebotomy service is appointment-only.
- Around public holidays, check the live practice page rather than relying on a normal weekday timetable.
NHS Wales, Cardiff & Vale Health Board and Regulation
West Quay Medical Centre is in Wales, so the healthcare structure is different from an English GP practice. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is responsible for NHS services across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, and West Quay’s practice leaflet states that the surgery is contracted by the Health Board to provide General Medical Services.
The practice is identified in official Welsh health-system records as W97001 and sits within the Central Vale primary-care area.
