Need GP help today? Start with askmyGP, not a walk-in assumption
Cathedral Medical Centre offers a demand-led GP service. That means you contact the practice when you need help, a clinician reviews the request, and the team decides the most appropriate response.
You can contact the practice online through askmyGP, by telephone or by visiting Patient Services if online access is difficult. Simply arriving without contact does not guarantee an immediate GP consultation.
Is Cathedral Medical Centre a Walk-In GP Surgery?
Not in the sense that you can simply arrive and expect an immediate doctor consultation.
Mereside Medical says patients should preferably contact the practice online first. If you cannot use the online system, you can phone or visit the practice and Patient Services will help you.
The important distinction is between walking in to ask reception for help and having a walk-in GP appointment with no triage or booking. The first is possible; the second is not promised.
Use Cathedral’s askmyGP form where possible.
Call 01353 669923.
Speak with Patient Services during opening hours.
A clinician decides the best person and response.
If you are comparing other NHS practices where “walk-in” searches actually mean “I need help today”, our Mile Oak Medical Centre walk-in and same-day GP guide explains the same important difference between visiting reception and receiving an immediate GP consultation.
How Same-Day GP Help Works at Cathedral
Mereside describes Cathedral as a demand-led service. Routine pre-booked appointments are mainly used for planned work such as blood tests, cervical screening, dressings or injections.
For other clinical questions, the practice asks patients to contact it when help is needed and says requests are actioned on the same or following day.
Urgent clinical need
The Cathedral contact page says the response could be right away if urgent. This still begins with clinical review rather than a guaranteed walk-in slot.
Other clinical requests
Mereside says most other queries are actioned on the same or following day, with timing determined by clinical need.
Planned routine care
Blood tests, cervical screening and regular repeat treatments are examples of work for which routine appointments can be booked.
A similar same-day principle—triage first rather than guaranteed walk-in—is explained in our Tiptree Medical Centre same-day GP guide .
How to Contact Cathedral Through askmyGP
Mereside says that, where possible, patients should contact the practice online first because this helps the team manage requests efficiently.
Open Cathedral’s official contact page
Follow the Cathedral askmyGP link
Mereside operates separate askmyGP links for Cathedral, Staploe and Haddenham. Make sure you enter the Cathedral system if Cathedral is your registered practice.
Describe the request clearly
askmyGP can be used for a non-emergency medical problem, a healthcare question, self-care or community-service advice, and sick-note requests.
Tell the practice your preferences
Mereside asks patients to mention if they prefer a specific clinician or would prefer phone, face-to-face, video, text or email where clinically appropriate.
Watch for the response
The practice may call, send an askmyGP message or arrange an appointment. Keep your phone available and check the contact details you supplied.
Phone, askmyGP and Patient Services Hours
Cathedral’s official contact page currently publishes a simple weekday access window.
| Channel | Published availability | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Telephone | Monday–Friday, 8:00am–6:30pm | Clinical-access help, booking support, home-visit queries, fit notes and other questions. |
| askmyGP | Monday–Friday, 8:00am–6:30pm | Non-emergency clinical requests, health questions and sick notes. |
| Patient Services | Monday–Friday, 8:00am–6:30pm | In-person support if you cannot use the online route, registration or administrative help. |
| Out of hours | Evenings, weekends and bank holidays | NHS 111 for urgent non-life-threatening medical help; 999 for emergencies. |
Your Consultation May Not Start With a GP Face-to-Face Visit
Mereside says a senior clinician reviews patient requests and chooses the most suitable professional or team.
A clinician may call you if a telephone conversation is an appropriate way to handle the problem.
A consultation at Cathedral may be arranged when clinical assessment in person is appropriate.
Mereside also lists remote communication options, depending on the request and your preferences.
The wider Mereside team includes GPs, advanced practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, social-prescribing staff and other clinical roles. Being routed to another professional may therefore be part of the practice’s normal care model rather than a refusal to help.
Evening and Saturday Enhanced Access
Mereside says it works with colleagues in Ely Primary Care Networks to offer pre-booked enhanced-access appointments.
Enhanced-access appointments may be available between 6:30pm and 8:00pm.
Pre-booked appointments may be available between 9:00am and 5:00pm.
Repeat Prescriptions Use SystmOnline or Your NHS Account
Mereside separates repeat prescriptions from askmyGP.
SystmOnline
Mereside says patients can use SystmOnline to order a repeat prescription, view test results and access medical-record information.
NHS account
The NHS App or NHS website account can also be used for repeat prescriptions, results and records where access is enabled.
Test Results and Medical Records
SystmOnline and the NHS account can be used to view results and medical-record information where enabled.
Mereside’s current privacy guidance also explains that prospective health-record access may include free text, letters and documents once reviewed and filed by the GP.
Blood Tests at Princess of Wales Hospital Are Not Walk-In
This is especially important because Cathedral Medical Centre is based at the same Princess of Wales Hospital site as the Ely Community Diagnostic Centre blood-taking service.
Make sure the blood test has been requested
If Mereside has requested the blood test, the result will return to the practice for review.
Book the Ely CDC appointment
Mereside currently publishes 01223 808522 for adult Ely CDC blood-test bookings, with telephone booking Monday to Friday.
Collect the printed blood-request form first
The practice warns that the diagnostic centre cannot take the blood sample without the printed request form and labels.
Attend at the booked time
Do not arrive expecting an unbooked phlebotomy slot.
Fit Notes: askmyGP, Phone or Patient Services
Mereside’s fit-note guidance was updated in March 2026. It says you can request a new fit note or renewal through:
- Cathedral’s askmyGP route.
- Telephone on 01353 669923.
- Visiting Patient Services at the surgery.
Home Visits Are for Patients Who Are Genuinely Housebound
Mereside says home visits are generally for patients who are genuinely housebound and too unwell to attend the practice.
If you believe a home visit is necessary, Mereside asks patients to try to phone before 11:00am.
A clinician from the Duty Team will call back to assess the medical need. If a visit is arranged, it may not be your registered doctor who attends.
How to Register With Cathedral Medical Centre
Mereside currently welcomes registration requests from people living in or moving into Cathedral’s practice area and links directly to the national NHS registration service for organisation code Y00185.
Check that Cathedral covers your address
Use Cathedral’s postcode checker or compare your location with the published practice boundary.
Use the official online registration route
Mereside links Cathedral patients to the NHS Register with a GP surgery service for code Y00185.
Prefer paper?
Mereside says you can collect a paper registration form from Patient Services.
Wait for the practice to confirm registration
NHS guidance says registration is usually confirmed after the practice receives and processes the details. Do not assume registration is complete simply because the online form was submitted.
If Cathedral does not cover your postcode, use our NHS GP and medical-centre finder guide to check another practice’s boundary and registration route.
Cathedral Medical Centre Practice Boundary
Mereside says Cathedral can register patients in the city of Ely and surrounding area. The practice specifically lists:
- Coveney
- Little Downham
- Little Thetford
- Prickwillow
- Pymoor
- Queen Adelaide

- Witchford
A village being listed is useful guidance, but use the current postcode checker for the final boundary decision because GP catchment maps can change.

Before Travelling to Princess of Wales Hospital
- Confirm whether the practice has asked you to attend in person.
- If you only need GP advice today, starting with askmyGP or phone may avoid an unnecessary journey.
- Do not assume the Community Diagnostic Centre offers walk-in blood tests; Mereside says blood appointments are pre-booked.
- Check Mereside’s current homepage before travel: it is presently flagging car-park works at Princess of Wales Hospital.
- Tell the practice if you need an interpreter or have another communication or access need.
