Ordering repeat medicine? Use the right route before you run low
Radyr Medical Centre’s repeat-prescription rules are fairly simple once the important details are separated out: the NHS Wales App is the easiest online route, telephone prescription requests are not accepted, and the practice asks for two full working days to process a routine repeat request.
The part that catches people out is what happens after that. Practice processing and pharmacy dispensing are separate stages, so “approved” in an app does not necessarily mean the medicine is already waiting on the pharmacy shelf.
How to Order a Repeat Prescription Without Creating a Delay
A repeat prescription is normally for medicine that your GP has already authorised for repeat issue. The safest route is to check the item is actually on your repeat list, submit only what you need and leave enough working-day time for both practice review and pharmacy dispensing.
Check that the medicine is on your repeat list
Radyr says patients on long-term treatment are given a repeat list showing items authorised without a fresh doctor consultation. Do not assume a new or one-off medicine can be ordered as a repeat.
Use the NHS Wales App if your repeat item is available there
Radyr describes the NHS Wales App as the easiest and most efficient online route for reordering repeat medication.
In the app, go to the prescription area and select the repeat medicine you need.
If you prefer paper, tick only the items you need
Radyr says the repeat request slip can be completed and handed to the practice. A written request can also be sent by post.
Do not telephone a routine repeat request
The practice’s prescription page explicitly says routine repeat prescription requests are not taken by telephone. Use the app or written route instead.
Allow two full working days
Radyr asks patients to allow two full working days for the practice to process the prescription. Weekends and bank holidays are not working days.
Add pharmacy dispensing time
Once the prescription has been approved or sent onward, your pharmacy still needs time to prepare the medication. NHS Wales App guidance recommends allowing further collection time after approval.
Another Cardiff practice with a very similar “online/paper but no telephone repeat order” rule is covered in our Crwys Medical Centre repeat prescription guide . Comparing the two is useful because their processing rules are similar, but their exact ordering options are not identical.
Repeat Prescription Ordering Methods Compared
| Route | What Radyr publishes | Best use | Delay to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| NHS Wales App | Radyr describes this as the easiest and most efficient way to reorder repeat medication. | Patients who can see their authorised repeat item in the app. | Do not assume a missing item means the prescription has disappeared; it may be too early or due for review. |
| Paper repeat slip | Tick the items needed on the repeat request section and hand it in. | Patients who prefer a paper request or are already visiting the surgery. | Do not tick medicines you do not currently need. |
| Written request by post | Requests may be sent by post. Include a stamped addressed envelope if you need the prescription returned by post. | Patients who cannot use the app and have enough time before medication runs out. | Postal transit is extra time on top of the two-working-day processing period. |
| Telephone | Routine repeat prescription requests are not accepted by telephone. | Not an ordering route. | Calling reception solely to dictate routine repeat medicines. |
| Community pharmacy | Some patients may have an existing pharmacy-managed arrangement; confirm that arrangement with the pharmacy before relying on it. | Patients whose pharmacy already manages their repeat ordering. | Assuming every pharmacy automatically orders medicines on your behalf. |
Two Working Days Does Not Mean “Medicine Ready in 48 Clock Hours”
Radyr’s wording is two full working days. That matters around Fridays, weekends, public holidays and pharmacy collection.
Use the NHS Wales App, authorised written repeat request or another practice-approved route.
Allow two full working days. A Saturday, Sunday or public holiday is not one of those working days.
The NHS Wales App can show a repeat request as requested, approved or rejected. If rejected, contact the practice to understand why.
Approval is not the same thing as medicine being physically ready for collection. The pharmacy then completes its own dispensing process.
Using the NHS Wales App for Radyr Repeat Medicines
The current NHS Wales App can do more than simply submit the order. It can also help you see whether a repeat request is still waiting, has been approved or has been rejected.
Order an authorised repeat
Open the prescriptions area, select Order a prescription and choose an available repeat item.
Check the order status
NHS Wales App help says orders can be shown as requested, approved or rejected.
Older phone or tablet?
Radyr’s current app notice says the NHS Wales App can still be accessed in a web browser if an older mobile device no longer supports the mobile app.
Why a Repeat Medicine May Not Appear as Orderable
A missing button in the app does not necessarily mean your medication record has been deleted. NHS Wales App support lists several common reasons.
The medicine may not yet have reached its next ordering date.
A medicine review may need to happen before another repeat issue.
Check the app’s prescription-order history before submitting again.
Acute, one-off or some repeat-dispensing medicines may not use the normal repeat-order button.
NHS Wales also notes that medicines originally prescribed in hospital or another secondary-care setting may not appear like a GP-issued repeat item in the app.
Medication Reviews Can Hold Up a Repeat Request
Radyr says patients taking repeat medication are asked to have their regular medicines reviewed at least annually by an appropriate clinician such as a GP, nurse practitioner or practice nurse.
The repeat slip can indicate when a review is due. If the review is overdue, another routine repeat issue may be delayed until the clinical review is completed.
A Hospital Prescription Is Not Automatically a Radyr GP Prescription
Radyr’s prescription guidance makes an important distinction between medicines prescribed by the GP and medicines issued through hospital care.
Hospital prescription
Radyr says patients should contact the relevant hospital department or clinic to arrange collection from the hospital pharmacy.
The practice says it cannot simply convert a hospital prescription into a GP prescription at reception.
After hospital discharge
Radyr says patients should normally leave hospital with at least seven days of necessary medication.
If medicine needs to be added or changed on the GP repeat list, the practice usually receives an electronic discharge letter.
If You Run Out When Radyr Is Closed
NHS Wales has a specific emergency-medicine route that may help some patients who have run out of previously prescribed regular medication while their GP practice is closed.
Check whether the problem can wait until Radyr reopens
Emergency medicines supply is intended for genuine immediate needs, not as a replacement for normal repeat ordering.
Find a participating pharmacy
NHS 111 Wales allows patients to search for pharmacies offering Emergency Medicines Supply. Contact the pharmacy before travelling to check availability.
Attend in person with evidence where possible
NHS Wales says useful evidence can include an old repeat slip, medicine packaging or another record showing the medicine normally prescribed.
The pharmacist decides whether a supply is appropriate
Emergency supply is subject to professional assessment and does not apply to every medicine. NHS Wales specifically notes restrictions around controlled drugs.
Radyr’s Door Hours and Phone Hours Are Different
This is worth knowing before you travel. Radyr’s own website separately publishes when the doors are open and when the telephone service is open.
| Day | Door opening | Phone opening | Prescription planning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 08:30–18:00 | 08:00–18:30 | Two-working-day processing begins on working days, not weekends. |
| Tuesday | 08:30–18:00 | 08:00–18:30 | Use the app or written repeat route rather than phone ordering. |
| Wednesday | 08:30–18:00 | 08:00–18:30 | Check for public-holiday or temporary changes. |
| Thursday | 08:30–18:00 | 08:00–18:30 | A late-week request can cross into the following week. |
| Friday | 08:30–18:00 | 08:00–18:30 | Saturday and Sunday do not count as Radyr working days. |
| Weekend | Closed | Closed | Use NHS 111 Wales / pharmacy emergency medicine routes if the need cannot wait. |
Another Welsh GP where door hours, phone hours and prescription timing need to be read separately is covered in our Cwmfelin Medical Centre patient-access guide .
Do Not Use eConsult for a Clinical Prescription Problem
Radyr’s current website makes an unusual but important distinction: eConsult is for administrative requests only, such as sick-note enquiries.
Clinical advice or clinical requests should be made by telephoning the surgery. That means an ordinary repeat prescription can use the NHS Wales App, but a new clinical problem involving medication may need a different route.
NHS Wales App or accepted written repeat route.
Contact the practice to arrange the appropriate review.
Contact the surgery rather than treating it as a normal repeat order.
Radyr currently accepts admin requests such as sick-note enquiries through eConsult.

Registering With Radyr While Taking Repeat Medication
Radyr welcomes new patients who live within its practice area, subject to practice confirmation. People taking repeat medication should plan the move carefully so their old record transfer does not create an avoidable gap.
Check that your address is within the practice boundary
Use Radyr’s boundary information and registration route before submitting a full application.
Complete the current registration form
The practice provides an online registration form and says an NHS number helps it process the application.
Do not arrive with only a few tablets left
Radyr’s current registration guidance tells patients taking regular medication to make sure they have at least one month’s supply from their current GP practice.
Provide current medication information when requested
Radyr asks registering patients on medication to upload a patient summary including the current medication list when requested.

My repeat medicine is visible in the NHS Wales App
Use the app’s prescription area to submit the repeat request. Allow Radyr’s two full working days for processing, then allow your pharmacy time to dispense.
My repeat medicine is not showing in the app
NHS Wales says common reasons include ordering too early, a medicine review being due, the item already being requested, the medicine being acute/one-off, repeat dispensing, or the item not being enabled for online ordering. Contact Radyr if you cannot resolve the issue.
I do not want to order online
Use Radyr’s written repeat-prescription route. The practice says patients can hand in the repeat request or send it by post. Routine requests are not taken by telephone.
I have run out and the surgery is closed
NHS Wales says participating pharmacies may be able to provide an emergency supply of previously prescribed medicine after assessment. Contact the pharmacy before travelling. Use NHS 111 Wales if you need urgent advice.
The hospital gave me the prescription
Radyr says hospital prescriptions should be dealt with through the relevant hospital department/pharmacy and cannot simply be converted into a GP prescription at reception.
I am registering with Radyr and already take repeat medicine
Radyr advises patients taking regular medication to have at least one month’s supply from their current GP and to provide current medication information during registration when requested.
