Closed, Weekend or 6pm? Use the Right Kingsway Route
Kingsway’s access arrangements make more sense once you separate three things: the surgery itself, the wider 8am–6:30pm GP access requirement, and NHS 111 when routine practice cover has ended.
Weekend GP appointments are different again. From April 2026, Billingham and Norton Primary Care Network took over the local Enhanced Access service, while the practice says patients continue booking those clinics in the same way as before.
booked service
not routine booking
Should You Call Kingsway, Use Weekend GP Access or Contact 111?
NHS 111 is not a replacement for routine GP booking. The best route depends on whether the surgery is providing normal services, you have a booked enhanced-access option, or you genuinely need urgent care outside routine GP cover.
6PM Kingsway open
Call, visit or use the online service for normal practice access.
6:30 Late weekday cover
Use the practice’s currently published late-cover telephone route.
END Booked GP access
Use Billingham/Norton Enhanced Access when an appointment is arranged.
Use NHS 111 for urgent non-life-threatening care when routine GP cover is unavailable.
| Situation | Start here | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Routine GP request during weekday | Kingsway | Appointments 01642 553738 or online/NHS App. |
| 6pm–6:30pm weekday | 07392 866847 | This is the separately published cover route, not Kingsway’s normal reception line. |
| Planned evening/weekend GP appointment | Enhanced Access | Clinics are provided away from Kingsway at specified local sites. |
| Closed and urgent, but not life-threatening | NHS 111 | 111 assesses urgent-care options; it is not a routine future GP booking service. |
| Life-threatening emergency | 999 | Do not wait for the GP surgery or NHS 111. |

Kingsway Medical Centre Hours Need a Little Explanation
The current Kingsway website says your general practice service is available from 8:00am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday. It then breaks those hours into different access channels.
| Weekday time | Published access | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00am–6:00pm | Visit Kingsway Medical Centre | The current official contact page lists physical Kingsway access during this period. |
| 8:00am–6:00pm | Call the practice | Use the normal Kingsway telephone routes. |
| 6:00pm–6:30pm | Call 07392 866847 | A separate local cover arrangement operates during this final half-hour. |
| 8:00am–6:30pm | Practice website / NHS App | Online access remains part of the weekday GP service period. |
Calling Between 6pm and 6:30pm
Kingsway’s current contact page publishes 07392 866847 for the 6pm–6:30pm weekday period.
The practice’s “You and Your General Practice” page says services in this half-hour are covered under a local subcontract arrangement.
Weekend GP Appointments Changed Provider in April 2026 — Not Patient Access
Kingsway published an important 2026 update: from 1 April 2026, Billingham and Norton Primary Care Network began providing the local Enhanced Access service directly.
The practice says there was no pause or disruption, and that patients continue to access appointments in the same way. It also says clinics continue at the same locations and times.
The practice’s appointment information identifies Abbey Health Centre as the weekday extended-access location.
The same appointment information identifies Norton Medical Centre for Saturday Enhanced Access.
Normal GP Appointments at Kingsway
Kingsway’s appointment page says consultations are by appointment. Reception uses Care Navigation, which means staff may ask a few questions so the request can be directed appropriately.
Routine GP appointments
The practice currently describes standard routine appointments as 10 minutes.
Choice of doctor
Patients can request a routine appointment with a doctor of their choice, subject to availability.
Urgent care
For urgent appointments, the practice warns that you may not be able to choose which doctor sees you.
The practice also currently offers a limited number of GP telephone appointments that patients can book through the NHS App or SystmOnline.
NHS App Is Now the Preferred Online Route
Kingsway supports NHS online services through the NHS App, SystmOnline and compatible providers.
Its current online-services page specifically says the practice suggests using the NHS App if possible, because SystmOnline may be removed in the future.
Prescriptions
Order repeat medicines and nominate a pharmacy.
Test results
The practice says new and historic results can be viewed through supported NHS online access.
Appointments
View or book the appointment types that Kingsway has made available online.
Our NHS App booking and records guide for Enderley Road Medical Centre provides another practical example of separating NHS App functions from urgent telephone and out-of-hours routes.

Dr K. Wilson

Dr Oxley

Dr A. Kumar

Kingsway’s wider practice profile describes a multidisciplinary team including Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants, District Nurses, Health Visitors and Midwives.
You Can Ask for Telephone Advice From a GP or Nurse
Kingsway says patients may sometimes need advice rather than a face-to-face consultation.
Reception can explain when a doctor or nurse is available. Your telephone number may be taken so the clinician can call you back.
Need an Interpreter?
Kingsway asks patients who require an interpreter to contact the practice at least three working days before the appointment.
If language or communication support is important for safe care, mention it when arranging the appointment rather than waiting until you arrive.
Home Visit Requests: Phone Before 10am Where Possible
Kingsway asks patients who require a home visit to contact reception before 10am where possible.
- Home visits are intended for patients who are housebound because of illness or disability.
- A doctor or nurse may telephone first.
- Telephone advice may be enough for some problems.
- The clinician may decide that nurse attendance or hospital assessment is more appropriate.
- Call 999 instead when the situation is a life-threatening emergency.
Repeat Prescriptions: 48-Hour Practice Processing
Kingsway’s current repeat-prescription page publishes a clear rule: allow 48 hours for the practice to process a prescription request.
The practice increasingly encourages electronic requests through the NHS App.
Still supported, although Kingsway says NHS App is now its preferred online option.
Kingsway asks patients not to contact the surgery within the first 48 hours just to check request status.
For another worked example of a clearly published 48-hour GP prescription rule, see our Idle Medical Centre repeat-prescription guide .
Test Results: NHS App or Call Between 9am and 5pm
Kingsway says patients can now view test results through the NHS App.
For telephone result enquiries, the current practice information tells patients to call 01642 553738 between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.
Registering With Kingsway Medical Centre
The current NHS profile says Kingsway Medical Centre is accepting new patients. Kingsway’s own page says it welcomes new patients who live within the practice area.
Check the catchment
Kingsway provides a postcode-search tool showing its practice boundary.
Use the current registration route
Start from Kingsway Medical Centre’s new-patient page.
Complete the health questionnaire
Kingsway says new patients are asked to complete a health questionnaire because previous GP records can take time to arrive.
You may be offered a new-patient consultation
The practice says newly registered patients are offered a consultation with a nurse or doctor.
If Kingsway’s postcode checker says your home is outside its catchment, our NHS GP finder and registration guide can help you check another practice before submitting a second application.
Port Clarence Has a Separate Kingsway Contact Number
Kingsway’s contact page lists Port Clarence Clinic: 01642 564310.
Port Clarence is a separate local clinic route. Do not use that number as the normal Kingsway Billingham appointment line unless your care has been directed there.
Disabled Access and Arrival at Kingsway
The current practice profile says disabled parking spaces are available and the building has been designed to be user-friendly for disabled patients.
Additional requirements
Kingsway asks patients with additional disability-related needs to discuss them with the practice.
Automated arrival
An automated arrival system in the waiting room can be used to let the doctor or nurse know you have arrived without queueing at reception.
Why the April 2026 Enhanced Access Change Matters
Until 31 March 2026, the local enhanced-access service was delivered by a different organisation. Kingsway’s current news states that Billingham and Norton PCN took over directly from 1 April 2026.
For patients, the practice says this management change did not mean a new booking process, clinic cancellation or move to different sites.
That is useful context because an older search result may still mention the previous provider even though the patient-facing route has continued.

If You Are Comparing Another North-East GP Route
Online access can differ significantly between practices even in the same region. For example, our Claypath Medical Centre patient-access guide explains a Durham surgery that uses weekday online Patient Triage windows alongside telephone support and NHS 111 out of hours.
Common Kingsway Problems and the Next Useful Step
| Problem | Why it happens | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| You arrive at Kingsway after 6pm | Physical Kingsway access is published only to 6pm. | Follow the separate 6pm–6:30pm cover route or your appointment instructions. |
| You need a Saturday GP appointment | Weekend GP access is delivered through Enhanced Access. | Ask about a booked appointment at Norton Medical Centre. |
| You call 111 for a routine future GP appointment | NHS 111 is an urgent-care navigation service. | Use Kingsway’s routine appointment channels when the practice is available. |
| You cannot get through by phone | Busy call queues can occur. | Kingsway says its telephone system has a ring-back facility when a queue is active. |
| Repeat prescription is less than 48 hours old | The practice publishes a 48-hour processing period. | Check NHS App status rather than calling purely to chase it within that period. |
| You need a home visit | Home visits require clinical assessment. | Call before 10am where possible and explain why you cannot attend the surgery. |
| Your address fails the practice boundary check | Kingsway only accepts patients from its practice area. | Use the NHS GP finder and confirm another surgery’s catchment. |
